Implant retained dentures, also known as implant-supported dentures or snap-in dentures, are a revolutionary solution for replacing missing teeth. Unlike traditional dentures that sit on your gums and rely on adhesives, implant retained dentures are securely anchored to dental implants surgically placed in your jawbone.
These dental implants act as artificial tooth roots, providing a stable foundation for your dentures. The denture prosthetic clips or attaches directly to these implants, creating a secure connection that eliminates slipping, movement, and the need for messy adhesives.
At Forever Dental and Skin in Ashtead, Dr. Murray Pratt and Dr. Mary Talbot use advanced implant techniques to provide you with dentures that feel natural, function like real teeth, and restore your confidence. Whether you need upper dentures, lower dentures, or both, implant retained dentures offer a life-changing solution.

Everything you need to know about implant retained dentures
Implant retained dentures are secured by dental implants surgically placed in your jawbone, providing exceptional stability and eliminating slipping. Traditional dentures rest on your gums and rely on adhesives, which can lead to movement, discomfort, and difficulty eating certain foods.
Typically, 2-4 implants are needed for a lower denture and 4-6 implants for an upper denture. The exact number depends on your jawbone quality, oral health, and the type of denture system chosen. We'll determine the optimal number during your consultation.
Yes, most implant retained dentures are removable for cleaning and maintenance. They snap securely onto the implants and can be easily removed by the patient. However, fixed implant dentures (like All-on-4) are permanently attached and can only be removed by your dentist.
The complete process typically takes 3-6 months. This includes the initial consultation, implant placement surgery, a 2-4 month healing period for osseointegration, and final denture fitting. You can wear temporary dentures during the healing period.
Bone grafting may be necessary if you have insufficient jawbone density to support implants. This is more common if you've been missing teeth for an extended period. We'll assess your bone quality with X-rays during your consultation and discuss whether grafting is needed.
Remove your dentures daily for cleaning with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner. Clean around the implant attachments in your mouth with a soft toothbrush. Maintain regular dental check-ups every 6 months. With proper care, your implants can last a lifetime while the denture prosthetic typically lasts 7-10 years.
Yes! One of the greatest benefits is the ability to eat virtually anything you want - steak, apples, corn on the cob, and other foods that are difficult with traditional dentures. Implant dentures restore up to 70% of your natural chewing power.
Age is not a barrier to dental implants. As long as you're in good general health and have adequate jawbone, you're likely a candidate. Many of our patients receiving implant dentures are in their 70s and 80s and enjoy excellent results.
