The extraction site will fully heal and fill in with bone over several months, but you won't notice this process.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site dislodges or dissolves before the wound heals, exposing bone and nerves. It affects 2-5% of extractions. Prevent it by avoiding smoking, using straws, spitting forcefully, and following all post-operative instructions carefully. If you develop severe pain 3-4 days after extraction, contact us immediately.

Wait until the anesthetic wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Start with soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soup. Avoid hot foods, hard/crunchy items, and foods that require chewing for the first few days. Stay hydrated but avoid using straws for at least a week.

In most cases, yes. Replacing an extracted tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture prevents adjacent teeth from shifting, maintains jawbone density, preserves facial structure, and restores full chewing function. We'll discuss replacement options during your consultation. Wisdom teeth typically don't need replacement.

For simple extractions, many people return to work the next day. For surgical extractions, you may want to take 2-3 days off. Everyone heals differently, so listen to your body. Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours to prevent complications like bleeding or dry socket.
