What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is carefully removed from its socket in the bone. While our primary goal at Forever Dental and Skin is always to preserve your natural teeth, extraction becomes necessary when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or poses a risk to your overall oral health.

Modern extraction techniques have advanced significantly, making the procedure more comfortable than ever. Dr. Murray Pratt and Dr. Mary Talbot use gentle methods and effective anesthesia to ensure you experience minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.

Whether it's a simple extraction or a more complex surgical removal, our experienced team provides comprehensive care from consultation through recovery, ensuring you're comfortable and informed at every step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about tooth extractions

Does tooth extraction hurt?

With modern anesthesia techniques, you shouldn't feel pain during the extraction. You may feel pressure or pulling sensations, but not pain. After the procedure, some discomfort is normal and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients report the procedure is much easier than they expected.

How long does recovery take?

Initial healing typically takes 7-10 days. Simple extractions usually heal faster, while surgical extractions may take longer. Most people return to normal activities within 24-48 hours. The extraction site will fully heal and fill in with bone over several months, but you won't notice this process.

What is dry socket and how can I prevent it?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site dislodges or dissolves before the wound heals, exposing bone and nerves. It affects 2-5% of extractions. Prevent it by avoiding smoking, using straws, spitting forcefully, and following all post-operative instructions carefully. If you develop severe pain 3-4 days after extraction, contact us immediately.

Can I eat and drink after tooth extraction?

Wait until the anesthetic wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Start with soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soup. Avoid hot foods, hard/crunchy items, and foods that require chewing for the first few days. Stay hydrated but avoid using straws for at least a week.

Should I replace an extracted tooth?

In most cases, yes. Replacing an extracted tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture prevents adjacent teeth from shifting, maintains jawbone density, preserves facial structure, and restores full chewing function. We'll discuss replacement options during your consultation. Wisdom teeth typically don't need replacement.

Can I go to work after a tooth extraction?

For simple extractions, many people return to work the next day. For surgical extractions, you may want to take 2-3 days off. Everyone heals differently, so listen to your body. Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours to prevent complications like bleeding or dry socket.

Are there alternatives to tooth extraction?

Depending on the condition of your tooth, alternatives might include root canal treatment, dental crowns, or periodontal therapy. We always explore tooth-saving options first. However, sometimes extraction is the best choice for your long-term oral health. We'll thoroughly discuss all options during your consultation.

What sedation options are available?

We offer several sedation options to ensure your comfort: local anesthesia (numbing the area), oral sedation (relaxation medication), and referrals for IV sedation for complex cases or anxious patients. We'll help you choose the best option based on the complexity of your extraction and your comfort level.
