Ben Gurney

Having graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 2002, Ben completed house officer jobs in Edinburgh followed by surgical training in the North East of England, working in the fields of Accident and Emergency, Upper GI Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Intensive Care Medicine. A year working at the Sunderland Royal Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Unit inspired Ben to specialise in this field and complete a postgraduate dental degree at Kings College London. Whilst studying in London, Ben spent time working as a Maxillofacial Registrar in several London Units – St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London, Guy’s Hospital, Homerton, Whipps Cross and Harlow.

Ben then completed 5 years of specialist OMFS training in Surrey and Sussex, rotating between Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford and Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. He also spent time in cleft and craniofacial units including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

After passing the FRCS (OMFS) exit exam, Ben completed an overseas fellowship in Facial Trauma and Orthognathic (Jaw) Surgery under Professor Nastri at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia in 2015/2016. Ben was appointed as a Consultant OMF Surgeon in 2016.

Ben works primarily at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford with additional sessions at Frimley Park Hospital, East Surrey Hospital and Haslemere community hospital. Within a busy department, Ben is educational supervisor for the junior trainees and core member of the regional specialist skin cancer multidisciplinary network. He has practising privileges at Guildford Nuffield Hospital, Frimley Parkside and Guildford Mount Alvernia Hospital.

Ben has over 15 years of experience and has interests in a broad range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This includes the surgical removal of wisdom teeth and impacted teeth, placement of dental implants and treatment of jaw pathology such as cysts. He is expert in treating facial skin lesions ranging from benign skin tags to complex melanoma cases, and are particularly skilled with facial plastic surgery reconstruction techniques to give patients the very best cosmetic outcomes.  Ben is highly experienced in orthognathic (jaw deformity) surgery, using contemporary planning and surgical techniques to deliver stable and consistent results and he enjoys working with orthodontists to provide excellent continuity of care for patients.
