What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that completely encases the visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. Often called a "cap," a crown restores the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance, providing 360-degree protection that helps prevent further damage.

Unlike veneers which only cover the front surface, dental crowns encase the entire tooth above the gum line. This makes them ideal for teeth that have been significantly damaged by decay, cracks, or trauma, or teeth that have undergone root canal treatment and need extra protection.

A crown is what I recommend when a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to hold it together, often after a large cavity, a fracture or root canal treatment. The crown covers the whole tooth above the gum, so it protects what is left rather than patching it.

The two things patients care about are strength and appearance, and modern ceramics deliver both. I match the shade to your neighbouring teeth and shape the crown so it meets your bite properly, because a crown that is even slightly high will trouble you every day. Wherever I can, I keep as much of your natural tooth as possible underneath it.

My recommendationIf a back tooth has had root canal treatment, do not put off the crown. Root-treated back teeth are brittle, and a fracture cannot always be repaired.

Will it look like a real tooth?

Yes. Ceramic crowns are made from a digital scan and shaded to match, and I check the result in natural light before it is cemented.

How long does the process take?

Usually two visits about two weeks apart: one to prepare the tooth and scan it, one to fit the final crown. You wear a temporary crown in between.

How long will it last?

With good care, crowns typically last fifteen to thirty years. Decay at the gum line and grinding are the usual threats, so cleaning around the edge every day matters more than anything.

How long does a dental crown last?

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel pain during treatment. After the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience mild sensitivity for a few days.

What's the difference between a crown and a cap?

There is no difference - "crown" and "cap" are simply different names for the same dental restoration.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment removes the tooth's blood supply, making it brittle and prone to fracture. A crown protects the weakened tooth and restores its strength.

Can I eat normally with a dental crown?

Yes! Once your permanent crown is fitted and the cement has fully set (usually 24 hours), you can eat normally.

Will my crown look fake?

No. Modern dental crowns, especially all-porcelain and zirconia crowns, are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Can crowns fall off?

While rare, crowns can occasionally become loose. If this happens, save the crown and contact us immediately.

What type of crown is best?

The best crown depends on your specific needs. Porcelain and zirconia offer the best aesthetics for visible teeth. Gold or PFM crowns provide maximum durability for back molars.

How do I care for my crown?

Care for crowns exactly like natural teeth: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and visit your dentist regularly.

Will my crown stain?

Porcelain and zirconia crowns resist staining better than natural teeth and won't change colour from coffee, tea, or wine.
