Retainers are the part of teeth straightening that patients most underestimate. Once teeth have moved, the bone and ligaments around them take a long time to settle, and without a retainer they drift back. Every patient we straighten leaves with retainers, and we also make them for people whose treatment was done elsewhere.

Vivera retainers are worth the extra cost over a standard clear retainer. They are made from a digital scan by the makers of Invisalign in the same SmartTrack material, which makes them around 30 per cent stronger than other clear retainers, and they come as a set so you always have a spare when one cracks or goes missing.

My recommendationIf your old retainer no longer fits, bring it in rather than forcing it. A new scan and a fresh set is usually all that is needed before the teeth move further.

How long do I need to wear retainers?

Around twenty-two hours a day for the first three to six months after treatment, then every night, for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight.

What if I stop wearing them?

Teeth begin to relapse within weeks. Small movements can sometimes be corrected with a short course of aligners; larger ones mean full treatment again.

How long do retainers last?

Vivera retainers typically last one to two years with proper care, which is why they come as a set. Clean them with cool water and a soft brush, never hot water, and keep them in the case when they are out of your mouth.
