As a specialist orthodontist, moving teeth is what I do, and the most important part of my job happens before any brace is fitted. I assess how your teeth, jaws and face fit together, then choose the approach that will give a stable result, whether that is clear aligners, fixed braces or a combination.

Patients often arrive with a treatment already in mind, and I will always tell you honestly whether it can achieve what you want. Some bites need the control of fixed braces; many can be treated beautifully with aligners. The right answer depends on the teeth, not the fashion, and I would rather explain that clearly at the start than compromise the result.

My recommendationDo not delay an orthodontic assessment for a child because the adult teeth are not all through. Some problems are far easier to correct while the jaws are still growing.

Questions patients ask me

Am I too old for braces?

No. Healthy teeth and gums matter far more than your age, and around a quarter of orthodontic patients are adults.

How long will treatment take?

Invisalign averages twelve to eighteen months and fixed braces eighteen to twenty-four. Simple alignment can be quicker and complex bite correction longer, and I give you a realistic range at the assessment.

Will I need retainers afterwards?

Yes, indefinitely. Teeth drift for life, and retainers are the only thing that keeps them where we put them.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

You may experience some mild discomfort or pressure when braces are first fitted or aligners are changed, but this is temporary and typically subsides within a few days. Modern orthodontic techniques have made treatment much more comfortable than in the past.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment duration varies based on complexity. On average, Invisalign takes 12-18 months, while traditional braces typically require 18-24 months.

Am I too old for braces?

Absolutely not! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. About 1 in 5 orthodontic patients is an adult.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes, retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment. You'll typically wear your retainer full-time for the first few months, then nightly for life.
