Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth, and it is usually painless until the damage is advanced. Treatment starts with a proper assessment of the pockets around each tooth, then deep cleaning to remove the bacteria below the gum line, and a maintenance plan with our hygienist to keep them away.

The patients who do best are the ones who understand that this is a condition we manage together. I can remove the infection and stabilise things, and we have laser treatment for cases that need it, but the daily cleaning between visits is what stops it coming back. Explaining that clearly is a large part of my job.

Is the treatment painful?

Deep cleaning is done with local anaesthetic where needed, and most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Gums often feel better within days.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis can be reversed completely. Periodontitis, where bone has been lost, can be stopped and kept stable, but the lost bone does not grow back, which is why early treatment matters so much.

How often will I need to come back?

Mild cases usually need one or two deep cleaning visits. Afterwards, maintenance cleans every three to four months while things stabilise, and we review the interval as your gums respond.

How long does treatment take?

Depends on severity. Mild cases: 1-2 deep cleaning appointments. Moderate to severe: multiple visits over several weeks or months. After active treatment, regular maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months.

Will my gums grow back after treatment?

Gums don't naturally grow back once receded. However, treatment stops further recession and promotes healing. For severe recession, gum grafting procedures can cover exposed roots.

Can I treat gum disease at home?

Good oral hygiene at home is essential but professional treatment is necessary once disease has developed. Home care alone cannot remove hardened tartar below the gum line.
