What Is Teeth Straightening?

Teeth straightening, also known as orthodontic treatment, is a dental procedure designed to correct misaligned teeth and bite issues. Whether you have crooked teeth, gaps, overcrowding, or an improper bite, teeth straightening can transform both the appearance and function of your smile.

Modern orthodontic treatments have evolved significantly, offering more comfortable, discreet, and efficient solutions than ever before. From traditional metal braces to virtually invisible clear aligners like Invisalign, there's a teeth straightening option to suit every lifestyle and preference.

At Forever Dental and Skin, Dr. Murray Pratt and Dr. Mary Talbot provide expert orthodontic consultations to determine the best treatment approach for your unique needs. Straighter teeth aren't just about aesthetics—properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reduce the risk of gum disease, and can improve overall oral health.

YOUR DENTIST FOR THIS TREATMENT

Dr. Murray Pratt on Teeth Straightening

First-hand advice from the clinician who plans and provides this treatment at our Ashtead practice.

Most of the adults who ask me about straightening are surprised how discreet modern treatment is. Clear aligners handle the majority of crowding, spacing and mild bite problems, and for the cases that need more control we have a specialist orthodontist, Monika Cedro, in the practice. Either way, the plan starts with a scan of your teeth and a simulation of the result.

In my experience the simulation is the moment most people decide. Watching your own teeth move on screen, with a realistic number of months attached, turns a vague wish into a decision you can make with confidence. If straightening is not the right option for you, I would rather say so at the scan than halfway through.

“Seeing your own teeth move on screen answers more than any brochure can.”

— Dr. Murray Pratt, Principal Dentist & Clinical Director

My recommendationHave any outstanding dental work, especially gum treatment, done before you start. Healthy gums move teeth predictably; inflamed ones do not.

Questions patients ask me

Am I too old?

No. There is no age limit as long as your teeth and gums are healthy, and around a quarter of orthodontic patients are adults.

How long will it take?

Invisalign typically takes six to eighteen months for mild to moderate cases, and fixed braces twelve to twenty-four. Your simulation gives you a realistic estimate before you start.

Aligners or braces?

Aligners suit most adults and are nearly invisible, but some bite corrections still need fixed braces. I give you a straight answer at the assessment, and if your case needs a specialist opinion, Monika is in the same building.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Treatment duration varies based on the complexity of your case and the method chosen. Invisalign typically takes 6-18 months for mild to moderate cases, while traditional braces usually require 12-24 months.

You may experience some discomfort or pressure, especially after adjustments or when starting new aligners. This is normal and indicates your teeth are moving. Most patients describe it as mild soreness rather than pain, and it typically subsides within a few days.

Absolutely! There's no age limit for orthodontic treatment. Approximately 25% of orthodontic patients are adults. Modern options like Invisalign are particularly popular among adults because they're discreet and fit seamlessly into professional lifestyles.

The cost varies depending on the treatment type and complexity. Invisalign typically ranges from £2,000-£5,000, while traditional braces range from £1,500-£4,000. Flexible payment plans and 0% finance options are available.

Yes, retainers are essential to maintain your results. After treatment, you'll need to wear retainers to prevent your teeth from shifting back. Initially full-time, then transitioning to nighttime wear only.

With Invisalign, there are no food restrictions since you remove the aligners before eating. With traditional braces, avoid hard foods, sticky foods, and foods that can get stuck in braces.

With Invisalign, typically every 6-8 weeks. Traditional braces require visits every 4-6 weeks for adjustments and monitoring.
