What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged. When the pulp inside your tooth (containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes inflamed or infected, root canal treatment removes the damaged tissue, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.

Despite its reputation, modern root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a standard filling. With advanced anaesthesia techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, we can perform the procedure efficiently and comfortably, often in just one or two visits.

Root canal treatment saves teeth that would otherwise be lost to infection. When the nerve inside a tooth dies or becomes infected, I remove it, clean and shape the canals, and seal them so the tooth can stay in place for years. Keeping your own tooth is almost always better than any replacement.

The reputation of root canals is decades out of date. With modern anaesthetics and techniques the appointment feels much like having a filling, and most patients are relieved to find the pain they came in with has gone by the next day. Most treatments take one or two visits of an hour to an hour and a half.

My recommendationHave the crown fitted promptly after treatment on a back tooth. A root-treated molar without a crown is at real risk of fracturing under chewing forces.

Is it painful?

The tooth is fully numbed before I start. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and settles with ordinary painkillers.

How successful is it?

Root canal treatment succeeds in over 95 per cent of cases, and a properly restored tooth can last a lifetime. Where a tooth has a poor outlook I will tell you before we start rather than after.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

For back teeth, usually yes, because they take heavy chewing forces. A front tooth may only need a filling if enough of the tooth remains.
